The start of a new year is always a time to reflect on the year that was, but more importantly it is a time to look forward and make positive changes for the coming year. A study done last year by the University of Scranton and published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology showed that about 45 percent of Americans make resolutions each year and that by six months into the new year, only 46 percent of those making resolutions have stuck to them.
There are many reasons why people don't keep their resolutions. Some set unrealistic goals, some make too many resolutions, some fail to track their progress, while others simply forget.
"While sticking to a resolution does take commitment," said Jiancheng Huang, Public Health Director for Oswego County, "it doesn't have to be time consuming." Huang suggestssome simple steps --that take five minutes or less --to help improve you and your family's health this year:
Take these simple steps to begin a year of improved wellness and health. In addition, these simple tasks can help reduce your risk of infectious disease, injury, and disability.
"Even the smallest steps can have positive impact and help you gain confidence to tackle bigger challenges like becoming more active, improving nutrition and eating habits, and quitting smoking," said Huang.
