OSWEGO - Local residents are continuing to receive direct mail solicitations from companies that offer to provide deed reports and other information for fees of $83 to $89, when the information is readily available through county offices, County Clerk Michael Backus said today.
Property owners can obtain a certified deed at the Oswego County Clerk's office at 46 E. Bridge St., Oswego for $5. Property tax records are public record and are posted on the Real Property section of the Oswego County website at http://rptsweb.oswegocounty.com/search.aspx.
A local resident who purchased property in December recently received solicitations from Record Transfer Services, based in Westlake Village, CA, and Local Records Office, which has an Albany, NY mailing address. The companies offered to provide a "complete property profile" or "property assessment profile" and a copy of the deed.
"This information is public record and has been available on the county government website for years," said Real Property Tax Director Deborah Mullenax. "There isn't any reason to pay a company in Albany or California for information on your property."
Backus said that when a piece of property is legally transferred, the new transaction is recorded in the CountyClerk's Office and the new owner receives the original deed.
