The Oswego County Division of Mental Hygiene is looking for input from the community on the transportation needs of residents seeking mental health services in the county. The Division of Mental Hygiene would like to develop a transportation optionfor individuals with mental health disorders and transportation challenges, and is conducting a survey to gather information.
"For individuals seeking support for mental health conditions, there are several barriers that often make participating in servicesa struggle," said Nicole Kolmsee, Director of Community Services for the Oswego County Department of Social Services, Division of Mental Hygiene. "One major obstacle is lack of transportation.Transportation to services is a concern stated by all consumer and provider groups."
In Oswego County, rural areas make up much of the county. There are several characteristics of rural areas that make it difficult to coordinate transportation. These include long distances between population centers, and in turn substantial distances between mental health provider locations and personal residences. Issues related to use of public transportation, Medicaid transports, and challenges associated with maintaining personal vehicles can also be significant barriers to participating in services.
"If you are a consumer of mental health services or a caregiverfor a youth or adult with mental health issues, we are seeking your responses to a brief online survey. The survey consists of just 19 questions," said Kolmsee. "Ten to 15 minutes of your time can help to improve transportation options for you and others with mental health service needs in Oswego County."
The survey can be accessed at the following web address: www.surveymonkey.com/s/mhTransportation
