Prepaid Trash Bags are Now Available at Oswego County Transfer Stations

Oswego County residents who use the solid waste transfer stations now have the option of purchasing 13-gallon prepaid trash bags to dispose of their trash. The bright yellow bags are marked with the Oswego County seal and are availableat the transfer stations.

The bags are sold in a unit of 10 bags for $20.

"The Legislature's Infrastructure, Facilities and Technology Committee approved the prepaid trash bag program earlier this year as an alternative for residents who don't want to purchase an annual solid waste sticker," said committee chairman Robert Hayes, District 10, Phoenix. "Under the suggestion of Legislator Marie Schadt, the committee has been working with Solid Waste Director Frank Visser to develop a policy for distributing colored prepaid bags. The target customers for this program are senior citizens who tend to generate less household trash. We looked at several different options and decided to start with 13-gallon bags."

The trash bags may only be used once and are not refundable. Purchasers must submit proof of residency with an Oswego County street address, such as a valid driver's license or property deed, rent receipt or other documents, to show they are residents of Oswego County.

The Legislature's Infrastructure, Facilities and Technology Committee oversees the county solid waste facilities. In addition to Legislator Hayes, the committee includes Stephen Walpole, vice chairman, District 14, Oswego; Marie C. Schadt, District 19, Oswego; David Holst, District 4, Amboy; Linda Lockwood, District 11, Volney; Milferd Potter, District 2, Orwell; and James Weatherup, District 9, Central Square.
