Young artists and their parents invited to May 7 meeting on Oswego Mural Project

OSWEGO - Spring is here again and the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau is gearing up for the start of the Springboard Mural Project.

"Starting our seventh year of artwork, the mural committee is actively seeking interested youth artists who would like to create a piece of artwork in a public space in the city of Oswego. Youth ages 13 and older, and 8- to 12-year-olds with parent attendance during painting, are welcome to participate," said Dawn Metott, youth services specialist."Last year over 35 students completed more than 40 murals along the river walk and we are hoping to expand that number this year to complete even more murals."

Interested young artists and their parents are encouraged to attend an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 7 in the Common Council Chambers of Oswego City Hall, 13 W. Oneida St.

"Please attend this meeting if you would like any more information or to participate in this project," said Metott.

The mural project is a youth -focused initiative, with the design concept and implementation directed by local young people with the support of the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau. Murals are located on West Linear Park near the Utica Street Bridge and were designed and created by local students. The project was originally a city-sponsored community development plan to address graffiti issues.

"Many of the youth artists we have in the group come back year after year to participate," said Metott. "They love helping out their community and seeing a piece of artwork they created in a public space to be enjoyed by everyone. Instead of just covering up the graffiti, the community has come together and invested in something special that reflects the sense of community pride, which has made this project successful."
