AmeriCorps Helps Communications Student Develop Her Leadership Skills

FULTON - Last summer, Vanessa Langdon served as an AmeriCorps member at the Fulton Public Library. She initiated a successful Teen Advisory Council and oversaw a group of teens who met weekly to improve the library's teen book section and participated in a book club. They also did a cleanup project that beautified the library grounds.

A resident of Fulton, Vanessa is currently a sophomore at the College of St. Rose in Albany, majoring in communications. She will return for her third term of service with Oswego AmeriCorps this summer.

As a college student, her AmeriCorps experience has benefitted Vanessa in many ways. "I've honed my leadership skills while working with a great support team," said Vanessa."I was able to build a program that continued to be in place after I left at the end of last summer. My experience with AmeriCorps is valuable on my resume because it shows that I can make a plan and find creative solutions to roadblocks. This has also allowed me to practice skills that I will need later in my career field."
