Oswego AmeriCorps Is Recruiting Host Sites for Programs that Serve Youth

OSWEGO COUNTY - This year, 63 individuals are serving youth in Oswego County through the Oswego AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps, a national service program, addresses critical needs in local communities. Members in Oswego AmeriCorps provide mentoring, fitness activities, nutrition education and manage volunteers. In Oswego County the program is administered by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.

A team of AmeriCorps members are providing a summer lunch program as well as fitness and nutrition activities for youth at Hamilton Homes in Oswego through OCO Nutrition Services. Cynthia Emrich, Patricia Michel and Matt Jones have returned to the program for the summer, after serving previously in Oswego AmeriCorps. Cindy Williams is new to the program this summer. Michel and Williams' positions are sponsored by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau. The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau has begun planning for the 19th year of the Oswego AmeriCorps program, pending funding announcements bythe New York State Commission on National and Community Service.

Non-profit, education and government agencies are invited to apply to host an AmeriCorps member through the Oswego AmeriCorps program. If funding is approved, members can start Oct. 1. Members will mentor youth, provide fitness and nutrition activities, and manage volunteers.

Host sites complete an application that outlines the duties for each position. Members can create new programs for youth or enhance existing services. Both 900-hour and 300-hour positions may be available. Each site is required to provide a share of the cost for a member position.

Site applications requesting AmeriCorps members to begin service this fall are due by Aug. 14. Member recruitment and selection will begin after that date. Individuals interested in becoming AmeriCorps members can apply anytime.

For more information or site and member applications, contact Kathy Andolina, program coordinator at (315) 349-3451 or kathleen@oswegocounty.com
