NYSAC Committee Will Sow Seeds for Stronger Farms in NY

County leaders invested in farming issues and policy will convene for the first time next week during the Annual Fall Seminar of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC).

While the association's Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Future of Farming has met for the past five years, this will be the first of the newly created Agriculture Standing Committee, a group empowered to steer NYSAC's policy making agenda with state and federal officials.

"Agriculture is one of the most important industries in New York State, vital to the state's economy and well-being. County officials have much at stake in the future of farming and the agriculture industry in New York and this new Committee will enable local officials to carry another important voice to the statehouse and to our representatives in Washington," said Stephen J. Acquario, executive director for the statewide municipal association.

At the 2015 NYSAC Legislative Conference, the NYSAC Board of Directors voted to create a permanent standing committee on agriculture. The NYSAC Agriculture Standing Committee will help shape county positions on statewide and federal legislative issues. Owsego County Legislator Terry Wilbur was one of the county officials who spearheaded the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Farming.

"Terry Wilbur was instrumental in the creation of the Blue Ribbon Task Force, and we are happy that he will take an active role on this Standing Committee. His thoughtful contributions were critical to the success of the Task Force and we have much work to accomplish to ensure that this industry succeeds," said Wyoming County Chairman Doug Berwanger, Chairman of the NYSAC Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Future of Farming and the new Chair of the NYSAC Committee.

All of NYSAC's standing committees will meet on Monday, September 21st as part of the 2015 Fall Seminar in Lake Placid, NY (Essex County) on September 21, 2015. The standing committees develop and pass the resolutions that become the foundation of NYSAC's legislative platform.
