Eagle Scout Builds Raft for Museum's Fishing Pond

PULASKI - Thanks to West Monroe Eagle Scout Eric Hartmann, the fishing pond at the Salmon River Visitors Center and International Sport Fishing Museum has a new raft. The museum has developed a -acre fishing pond on the museum grounds on state Route 13, but needed a structure in the pond for the fish to hide under.

The pond is stocked with more than 40 largemouth bass.Visitors are welcome to cast and release their catches.

Hartmann and members of his troop, Troop 735 of West Monroe, completed the raft and installed it in August.

"At last year's Celebrate Fishing event, Eric watched an osprey help himself to three largemouth bass which we had purchased for fishing," said Mike Riordan, president of the museum board of directors. "When I noted that we needed to create a shelter for the fish to hide under, Eric stepped up and indicated that he was looking for an Eagle Scout project and he would see if he could get it approved."

Over the past several months Ericdesigned, obtained required approvals, contacted potential donors and earned money for the project by making hand-crafted wood pens. In May he reported that the project was approved and the raft would be built this summer. White's Lumber of Pulaski donated wood, silicone, and screws for the project; Bryan Rodrick donated the four barrels; and others donated bottles and cans and purchased Eric's custom-madepens.

"The museum is very appreciative of Scout Troop 735 and especially project manager Eric Hartmann, Kyle Hartmann, John Hartmann, Chase Kaylor, who assisted with the building, Bridgette Hartmann for taking photos and Eric's mom Aileen, who assisted Eric along the way.Thank you to Eric and his troop for using materials and constructing the raft so that it will last for many years to come!" said Riordan.

The Salmon River Visitors Center and International Sportfishing Museum is located at 3044 State Rt. 13, Pulaski. For information call 315-298-2213 or e-mail mrmike@twcny.rr.com .
