One Stop Center Helps Jobless Get Back into the Workforce

FULTON -Over the past few months dozens of local residents have upgraded their skills and found jobs using the resources available through the One Stop Center at the Oswego County Branch Office Building, 200 N. Second St., Fulton.

The Oswego County Workforce New York One Stop Center provides a full range of services for unemployed and underemployed job seekers, including employment counseling, assistance with resumes, cover letters and interviewing skills. Residents can get information on job listings through the NY Job Bank and referrals to job openings in local industries. Computer equipment, Internet access, printers, copy machines and phones are available to help people in their search for employment.

"Jobseekers can upgrade their skills, get help finding suitable employment, attend employer recruitment sessions and have access to a variety of programs including career assessment, career exploration, career planning services and employment counseling," said Michelle Smith, employment advisor at the Oswego County Workforce NY One Stop Center in Fulton.

Over the past year the One Stop assisted 18 local employers, including several large industries, with employment and training needs such as pre-employment testing, recruitment, and referrals.

"The One Stop Center provides many support services and opportunities for customers to upgrade their skills -- from improving basic math and reading skills to preparing for licensing exams through the Metrix Online Learning System," said Smith. "We also offer workshops to sharpen job keeping skills and classes on digital literacy to help our customers use technology in their search for employment. Others are able to earn a paycheck while learning new job skills through on-the-job training opportunities."Over the past year 41 people were hired and trained at 12 different businesses through the on-the-job training program," said Smith.
