Winona Forest Hosts Deer Fly Trail Competition Aug. 27

WINONA FOREST - Winona Forest Recreation Association will host the 5- and 10-K Deer Fly Trail Race Saturday, Aug. 27 at Winona Forest Recreation Area. The course covers beautiful wooded and scenic trails through northern Oswego and southern Jefferson counties and is suitable for all ages and abilities.

"The trails are designed to be relatively smooth, so you can enjoy the running experience," said race coordinator Matt Westerlund. "There are no major climbs on the 5K course. Most of the course is on wide dirt paths or road, ending with about one mile of single track. The 10K course is a bit more challenging, adventurous and gritty, but do-able for all ability levels."

The race will start and finish at the CCC Camp, county Route 90, Mannsville. Families are encouraged to participate. Registration for children 12 and under is free.

Trail maps and race information are available at winonaforest.com. To register, visit www.runreg.com/deerfly.

All pre-registered participants will receive a commemorative 2016 Deer Fly pint glass. The top three overall male and female winners will be recognized in both distances.

An all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast will be served after the race. All donations will support Winona Forest Recreation Association activities.

The Deer Fly Trail Race is sponsored by Winona Forest Recreation Association, Ontario Health and Fitness, Pulaski PT and the Oswego County Tourism Office.

Located six miles east of I-81, Winona Forest Recreation Area encompasses more than 9,000 acres in northern Oswego and southern Jefferson counties. Volunteers maintain more than 40 miles of trails for year-round recreational use including hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, trapping, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, dog sledding, cross-country skiing, birdwatching and horseback riding.
