OSWEGO COUNTY - The Oswego Stamp Club is marking the county's bicentennial this year with special commemorative stamps. During the summer, the group held a pictorial cancellation, or postal imprint, ceremony and attended community events to celebrate the occasion and promote these collectible and lasting keepsakes.
The club created three separate cachet covers, or envelopes, with images featuring the Oswego County Bicentennial logo, an 1832 map of the county, and the H. Douglas Barclay Courthouse in Pulaski. Each envelope is also affixed with a stamp depicting either the American flag or the War of 1812 commemoration.
The cachets are available for $2 each or $5 for a set of three, with a choice of images and stamps. The stamp club has also arranged for another option to showcase these mementos, to have the set framed by The Picture Connection, 169 W. First St., Oswego. Framed display sets are available for $60; however, people can provide their own frame and have them set for $30.
The Oswego Stamp Club has created other cachets to honor Oswego County's history. They include commemorative stamps for Oswego Town resident Dr. Mary Walker, the Kingsford Bell in Breitbeck Park in Oswego, and Oswego's Harborfest.
The club was started during the winter of 1947 to 1948 to serve the community and assist people with an interest in stamp collecting. In addition to pictorial stamp cancellation events, the group, led by president Leigh LeClair, also provides guidance about the various methods of collecting and exhibiting.
One of the club's primary goals is to commemorate local history. Club members welcome people or groups to contact them for help with their tributes. The Oswego Stamp Club meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Monday of the month, September through June, at the Faith United Church on Mark Fitzgibbons Drive just off West Fifth Street in Oswego.
