Just in Time for the Holidays: Oswego County History Books Arrive!

OSWEGO COUNTY - The Oswego County Bicentennial Committee announced that the "Oswego County History" book will soon be available, just in time for holiday gift-giving! The commemorative edition represents the culmination of the county's bicentennial celebration this year. It will arrive in Oswego during the week of December 12 and be distributed to various municipal historians, historical societies, and museums for sale.

"This nearly year-long project is the result an enormous collaboration between historians from all areas, elected officials, and community members," said Oswego County Bicentennial Committee Chairman and Legislator Shawn Doyle, District 3. "Readers will enjoy a general summary of the county's history as well as that of its various cities, towns, villages and hamlets."

The 192-page book also contains histories of SUNY Oswego, Fort Ontario State Historic Site, and the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter and Museum. Colorful stories about the people and events that helped to shape Oswego County are also found in its pages. They include biographies of the founding fathers, black history and the Underground Railroad, and chronicles of the county's shipping industry and maritime history.

Hardcover books are bound in black cloth with a gold embossed title and county seal and covered with a color dust jacket. They are available for $20. Paperback books also feature this colorful cover and sell for $10.

The history books will available this gift-giving season from the following:

Doyle added, " The bicentennial committee felt it was important that the historians and historical societies should have the first opportunity for fund-raising, not only because they all contributed to the book, but also to support the vital work that they do to preserve the history of their communities. Therefore, they will have 90 days to conduct sales to raise money for their group or events. After that, the books will be released to retail stores for sale."

Other gift ideas include a special commemorative stamp to mark the county's bicentennial. The Oswego Stamp Club continues its sales of these unique cachets which include your choice of the Oswego County Bicentennial logo, an 1832 map of the county, and the H. Douglas Barclay Courthouse in Pulaski. The cachets are available for $2 each or $5 for a set of three, and framed display sets are also available. For details, call 315-342-4130 or at 315-592-4441.
