Jan. 31 is 'National Plan for Vacation Day'

OSWEGO COUNTY - It's never too early to plan for a vacation, and Jan. 31, "National Plan for Vacation Day," is a perfect time for workers to start thinking about how they'll use their vacation time in 2017.

"In Oswego County we're blessed with a wide variety of natural, cultural and historic resources that people can enjoy with their families," said Dave Turner, Director of Community Development, Tourism and Planning. "From world-class fishing with top professional charter captains and guides, to exploring unique museums like Safe Haven in Oswego or the Underground Railroad Museum in Mexico, antiques shops, and golf, we truly offer something for all ages, interests and physical capabilities."

Turner said the Oswego County Tourism website, at visitoswegocounty.com, is a great place to start, with comprehensive lists of attractions, fishing services, hiking trails, and visitor services for communities across the county.

"Visitors spent more than $135 million in Oswego County in 2015 and for good reason," said Turner. "For those who live in or near our county, there is plenty to do right here in our own backyards. I invite local residents to explore the county tourism website, use the interactive I-map to plan an itinerary, and start thinking about how you can spend some of your hard-earned time off."

Turner said research shows that Americans who take time to plan how they will use their vacation time in the year ahead are happier than those who don't.

"They are happier with their health and well-being, their financial situation, their marriage, and even their overall mood," he said. "Research also shows that simply having something to look forward to -- like a vacation - improves your happiness. But nearly half of American households fail to take the simple step of planning their time off."

Since 2000, vacation usage has been steadily declining in the U.S. In 2015, workers reported taking off just 16.2 days, almost a full week less than the pre-2000 average of 20.3 days annually.
