OSWEGO COUNTY - Oswego County Clerk Michael Backus announced that residents now have the option of purchasing E-ZPass tags for their car through his office.
"We are working with the New York State Thruway Authority as a retailer in the E-ZPass On-the-Go Program," said Backus. "This provides us an opportunity to better serve our customers by saving them time and money before they get on the road. People can get an E-ZPass quickly and efficiently without having to wait in line to fill out an application or to receive tags in the mail. Once they buy and register the device, they can begin using it immediately."
People can get started by visiting the Oswego County Clerk's Office at 46 E. Bridge St. in Oswego to purchase an E-ZPass kit for $25. Then they go to the E-ZPass Web site at https://www.e-zpassny.com/en/onthego/onthego.shtml or call 1-800-697-1554 to register the device. The $25 fee will be applied to the account once it is registered and drivers can begin to use it right away.
Backus added, "The system works by using an overhead antenna at the E-ZPass toll lane to read the drivers' tag, which is usually fixed to the windshield of the car, and collect the toll from the registered account. There are also video cameras at the toll lane to help identify evaders."
The E-ZPass program tracks the account holder's balance and usage to notify them if the balance goes below a pre-set level. They will receive itemized account statements through the mail or by e-mail, or they can call 1-800-333-8655 to check their account balance.
Accounts can be replenished by cash or check, or automatically by credit card once the balance goes below the pre-set level. Replenishment amounts are re-evaluated after the first 35 days, and again every 90 days after that, to ensure that the account maintains sufficient funds based on E-ZPass usage. The amounts and timing of replenishment are not always consistent and can vary depending on usage.
E-ZPass is accepted in Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Caroline, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia.
