State Budget that was passed included a proposal that
would require all Basic STAR recipients to register with the New York State Department of
Taxation and Finance in order to receive or continue receiving STAR. This is part of Governor Cuomo’s initiative to
protect New York taxpayers against the costs of inappropriate or fraudulent
General information regarding the bill is below; more information will be provided after the budget is enacted:
·The new registration will apply only to Basic STAR recipients - Enhanced STAR recipients will not be impacted .They will still need to reapply annually with the assessor.
· All recipients of Basic STAR, including taxpayers already receiving the exemption, will need to register with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
·The program will apply to 2014 STAR exemptions - taxpayers do not need to take any action now.
· Existing Basic STAR recipients will be notified directly by the Department of Taxation and Finance when it is time to re-register.
