AmeriCorps Mission

The mission of the Oswego AmeriCorps program is to provide positive prevention services to youth and families which will provide the components necessary for the healthy development of youth; improve school readiness and performance; empower youth to become responsible and self- sufficient; transition public assistance recipients to employment and provide positive alternatives and activities for youth and families. AmeriCorps members will be given diversified opportunities to be contributing community members and leaders.

History of the Corporation for National Service

"Created in 1993, the Corporation for National Service is a public-private partnership that engages Americans of all ages in service initiatives - AmeriCorps, which include more than 400 local and national programs, AmeriCorps VISTA and AmeriCorps NCC; the national Senior Service Corps, which includes Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program; and Learn and Serve America, which provides models and resources for teachers integrating service into classrooms from kindergarten through college."

What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps is the national service program that provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with education awards in exchange for a year or two of community service. AmeriCorps members help meet the nation's critical needs in the areas of public safety, education, human needs, and the environment. Through more than 400 sponsors, AmeriCorps involves 25,000 people in results-driven community service programs.

What are the Membership Benefits?

Our 1700 hour members serve for twelve months, receive a living allowance of $10,710 and an education award of $4,725. Our 900 hour members serve for six to twelve months, receive a living allowance of $5,670 and an education award of $2,362.50. Summer members serve 300 hours, receive a living allowance of $1,890 and an education award of $1000.

You will be representing America at its best, making a lasting difference while promoting the values of community, responsibility and opportunity. You can learn responsibility, valuable skills, all the while fulfilling your pledge to "get thing done."

What Kind of Work Will I Being Doing?

The organizations in the AmeriCorps service network are diverse. Some of the sites in Oswego County are: County of Oswego Child Care Council, Fulton YMCA, Oswego YMCA, Oswego County Opportunities, Inc., The United Way, Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, area public schools, and Camp Hollis.
