‘History on Tap’ Highlights Riverside Cemetery Research

The next ‘History on Tap’ features an illustrated presentation on research of notable Oswegonians buried in Riverside Cemetery. Presented by Marilyn Huntington and Caroline Lamie of Fort Ontario State Historic Site, the program begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5 in the Riverview Room at G.S. Steamers Restaurant in the Clarion Hotel, 70 E. First St., Oswego. Admission is free.

The research was conducted by SUNY Oswego history students in Dr. Candis Haak’s “Death, Data and Local Cemeteries” class, with assistance from experts Huntington and Lamie. The program includes a discussion about the various databases used, which are also available to people who want to look up information on their ancestors and others who have passed on.

“WE FIND DEAD PEOPLE” TEACHES STUDENTS HOW TO “DIG UP” PEOPLE OF THE PAST – Marilyn Huntington and Caroline Lamie of Fort Ontario State Historic Site give a presentation at the next ‘History on Tap’ detailing their research on notable Oswego residents buried in Riverside Cemetery. Pictured is the Headstone of Pvt. Charles S. Powers, Company C, 9th U.S. Infantry, buried at Riverside Cemetery. Powers enlisted in Company C, 9th U.S. Infantry at Fort Ontario with about a dozen Oswego men in the fall of 1898.  He and several others from Oswego were killed in action at the village of Samar, Philippine Islands on September 22, 1901. Sources for some basic military records will be discussed at ‘History on Tap.’
