Lead Poisoning Prevention
There is no medical treatment that can reverse the harm caused by lead. That's why it is important to take action before a child is harmed. New York State Public Health Law and Regulations require health care providers to:
- Obtain a blood test for all children at age 1 and again at age 2
- Assess all children ages 6 months to 6 years for risk of lead exposure at least annually
- Make certain children with an elevated lead level have appropriate follow-up testing and medical management
The Oswego County Health Department carries out actions to address lead poisoning prevention and follow up. The goals of these activities are to:
- Find and reduce sources of lead before they can harm children
- Teach the public, health care providers, and others about lead
- Promote lead testing for children
- Help children with lead poisoning by making sure they get the testing, education, and treatment necessary, and by helping their families find sources of lead in their home
