Remember Your Fur Family This July 4th

June 23, 2023

Independence Day, Harborfest and other summer events in Oswego County brings fun, food and fireworks!

“Remember, while most are enjoying these special times, fireworks can cause anxiety for many family members, including pets,” said Oswego County Associate Public Health Educator, Diane Oldenburg. “Everyone should take steps to make sure their pets and family members are safe during firework season. It’s best to leave the fireworks displays to the professionals and leave your pets at home.”

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), fear is the biggest motivator for dog bites. Dogs who feel anxious are much more likely to act out aggressively at perceived threats. (https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/dog-care/common-dog-behavior-issues/aggression)

Before fireworks begin, try these steps to help calm your pets:

  • Move your pet to a place they feel safe.
  • Close windows and curtains to help muffle the sound of fireworks. Curtains will also help cover any flashes your animal may see outside.
  • Put on the TV or play the radio to help cover the sound of fireworks.
  • Play indoors with your pet.
  • Provide toys, treats and other objects your pet enjoys.
  • Stay close to your pet.

If your pet continues to show signs of high stress and anxiety, talk with your veterinarian about further steps you can take.

To report an animal bite, call the Oswego County Health Department Environmental Division at 315-349-3564 or the After-Hours Hotline at 315-341-0086.
