SUCESSFUL NUCLEAR POWER PLANT EXERCISE – On June 21, Oswego County, Constellation and New York State held a successful federally-evaluated exercise of the radiological emergency preparedness plan put in place to protect the public in the event of a nuclear power plant accident. At a public briefing on June 23, Susan O’Neill, regional assistance chair of the Radiological Program of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region 2, said evaluators looked at 55 target capabilities to determine reasonable assurance for the public health and safety, and found no issues. Don Johnson, senior emergency planning specialist for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), said reasonable assurance exists that Constellation can effectively implement the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant’s plan. Above, Constellation spokesperson Kevin Irving provides an update during a mock media briefing at Constellation’s Joint Information Center as County Spokesperson Diane Oldenburg, New York State Spokesperson John Emery and an NRC spokesperson look on.
