Join Family Fun Day at the Richardson-Bates House Museum Aug. 13

July 28, 2023

The Oswego County Historical Society hosts Family Fun Day on Sunday, Aug. 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Richardson-Bates House Museum, 135 E. Third St., Oswego. The event features a wide variety of activities, from children’s games to unique demonstrations.

For a minimal fee, attendees can enjoy a virtual scavenger hunt on the first floor of the museum, children’s games with prizes and an ice cream social on the lawn.

In addition, face painting and children’s books will be offered at no charge. Staff from the Fort Ontario State Historic Site will give “old fashioned” laundress demonstrations and there will be a mock cow milking demonstration by the Oswego County Fair.

The event dates back to August 1918, when Florence Bates and her children held a fair day to raise money for the Oswego Hospital. Decades later, the historical society began hosting a children’s party on the museum’s lawn celebrating the August birthday of Maxwell Richardson, former owner of the home and two-term city mayor.

While that tradition ended, today’s historical society members re-launched the event in 2015 as Summer Fun Day, now known as Family Fun Day, as a day of fun and games for local children.

All proceeds of Family Fun Day will go toward the maintenance of the Richardson-Bates House Museum.

The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. April through December. For more information, contact the Richardson-Bates House Museum at 315-343-1342.
