Learn About Treatment and Prevention of Toxic Stress Oct. 17

Oct. 6, 2023

The Oswego County Trauma Informed Collaborative (OCTIC) presents a screening of the documentary film “Resilience” followed by a discussion panel with local mental health and social work experts on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Open to the public, the free event runs from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Marano Campus Center on the SUNY Oswego campus in Oswego.

Originally released in 2016, “Resilience” is an engrossing study of how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can be linked to destructive behavior and medical diseases. It also details the growing movement to treat and prevent toxic stress.

“Understanding the effects of prolonged stress and the science behind trauma’s impact on an individual’s life is a beginning point for our county to turn those outcomes around, which is exactly what this documentary accomplishes,” said OCTIC Chair Kate Ginney, staff development specialist for CiTi BOCES.

OCTIC is an effort to combine the knowledge and resources of local government, mental health professionals and advocates based around Oswego County.

“It’s important that we value and take care of our mental health as much as we do our physical health,” said OCTIC Vice Chair Jodi Martin, deputy public health director for Oswego County. “Trauma, including one-time, multiple or long-lasting repetitive events, affects everyone differently and its impact can be subtle or outright destructive. Our goal with OCTIC is to provide the education and tools needed to address the trauma that lives within our community.”

After the panel discussion, participants will be able to schedule a training session with the OCTIC on how to provide trauma-informed practices within the workplace.

The event is sponsored by State University of New York (SUNY) Oswego Counseling Services
