Oswego Town Historian George DeMass and Oswego County Historical Society President Mary Kay Stone lead the next “History on Tap” meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 1.  The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Riverview Room at G.S. Steamers Restaurant, located in the Clarion Inn, 70 E. First St., Oswego. Admission is free for the presentation which is open to the public.

During ‘History on Tap,’ DeMass and Stone present updates on initiatives celebrating Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, including the recent re-dedication of Fort A.P. Hill as Fort Walker and the upcoming quarter release from the U.S. Mint.

From Oswego, N.Y., Dr. Mary Edwards Walker is the first and, so far, only female recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. The medal was awarded to her by President Andrew Johnson in 1866 for her service during the Civil War. She treated the wounded from both sides on active battlefields, the sick in hospitals and civilians in their homes. In addition to her wartime service, Walker was an outspoken advocate for women’s rights.

They will present updates on recent celebrations of Walker, including Fort Walker in Virginia being rededicated in her honor and the upcoming release of her quarter in the U.S. Mint’s 2024 American Women Quarters Program.
