Oswego County Waives Civil Service Testing Fees Again for 2024

Jan. 12, 2024

The Oswego County Legislature approved a resolution at its organizational meeting to waive all civil service testing fees for the second consecutive year. The 2024 initiative helps remove a financial barrier to potential jobseekers, raise interest in open positions and encourage people to apply.

“Employers everywhere continue to face hardships when it comes to recruitment,” said Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup. “In an effort to make Oswego County jobs more accessible and appealing to candidates, we’re once again waiving civil service test fees. We hope that by taking this step, we’ll be able to attract more applicants to fill vacancies across all county departments.”

American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding will be used to cover annual revenue and expenses associated with civil service testing fees.

“County-wide, there are many career opportunities for people,” said Oswego County Director of Human Resources Julie Bell. “We encourage them to look at our current recruitments and apply for any job openings that interest them. For some positions, we may even be able to hire qualified candidates provisionally before the civil service test.”

Current job openings include caseworker, social welfare examiner, 911 communications specialist, medium and heavy equipment operators, accountant and public health educator, among many others.

Applications for open-competitive (OC) exams for account clerk, typist, senior typist, aging services specialist, case manager (aging) and custodian positions will be accepted until the Wednesday, Feb. 14 deadline, with exams scheduled throughout March.

Oswego County employees are eligible for numerous benefits, including paid time off, health insurance, life insurance, New York State retirement, the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program and more.
