Oswego County Legislature Chairman Announces Standing Committee Assignments

Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup (District 9, Hastings) announced appointments to the Legislature’s standing committees for 2024. The seven committees oversee departments of county government and make budgetary and policy recommendations to the full Legislature.

The 2024 standing committees are:

  • Government, Courts and Consumer Affairs: David Holst (District 4, Amboy) chairman; Michael Yerdon (District 1, Redfield) vice chairman; Charles Burger (District 17, Oswego), Edward Gilson (District 3, Pulaski), Noelle Beckwith-Salmonsen (District 21, Hannibal) James Scanlon (District 16, Oswego) and Robert Wilmott (District 18, Oswego).
    • The committee oversees the Board of Elections, Clerk of the Legislature, County Attorney’s Office, County Clerk’s Office, County Legislature, Office of the Chairman, Real Property Tax Service, Weights and Measures Department, Assigned Council, Strategic Initiatives Office and the Public Defender’s Office. It meets at 9 a.m. on Monday one week before the full Legislature meeting.
  • Public Safety: Marc Greco (District 24, Fulton), chairman; Paul Connolly (District 20, Oswego), vice chairman; Frank Bombardo (District 7, Mexico), Frank Castiglia, Jr. (District 25, Fulton), Mary Ellen Chesbro (District 10, Pennellville), Richard Kline (District 12, Pennellville) and Herbert Yerdon (District 2, Pulaski)
    • The committee oversees the District Attorney’s Office, E-911 Office, Emergency Management Office, Fire Coordinator’s Office, Probation Department and Sheriff’s Office. Meetings are held at 11 a.m. on Monday one week before the full Legislature meeting.
  • Human Services: Roy E. Reehil (District 5, Constantia), chairman; James Scanlon, vice chairman; Bombardo, Burger, Kevin Hill (District 15, Oswego), James Karasek (District 22, Granby) and H. Yerdon.
    • The committee oversees the Office for the Aging, Department of Social Services, Veterans’ Services Agency and Oswego City-County Youth Bureau. It meets at 2 p.m. on Monday one week prior to the full Legislature meeting.
  • Economic Development and Planning: Mary Ellen Chesbro, chairwoman; Noelle Beckwith-Salmonsen, vice chairwoman; Connolly, Gilson, Paul House (District 8, Hastings), Reehil and Marie C. Schadt (District 19, Oswego).
    • The committee oversees the Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning, Workforce Development Office and several authorized agencies. It meets at 9 a.m. on Tuesday one week before the Legislature’s full meeting.
  • Health: James Karasek, chairman; Michael Solowy (District 23, Granby), vice chairman; Castiglia, Greco, Hill, Kline and Scanlon.
    • The committee oversees the Health Department and meets at 11 a.m. on Tuesday one week before the full Legislature meeting.
  • Infrastructure, Facilities and Technology: Paul House, chairman; Stephen M. Walpole (District 14, Oswego), vice chairman; Holst, Linda Lockwood (District 11, Volney), John J. Martino (District 6, West Monroe), Schadt, Patrick Twiss (District 13, New Haven), Wilmott and M. Yerdon.
    • The committee oversees the County Airport, Energy Recovery Facility, Highway Department, Facilities and Technology Department and Solid Waste Department. The committee meets at 3 p.m. on Tuesday one week before the full Legislature meeting.

Finance and Personnel: Stephen M. Walpole, chairman; John J. Martino, vice chairman; Holst, House, Lockwood, Solowy and Twiss.

  • The committee oversees the Audit Department, County Administrator’s Office, County Treasurer’s Office, Human Resources Department and Purchasing Department. It meets at 2 p.m. on Thursday one week before the full Legislature meeting.

This year the Oswego County Legislature is scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 14; 7 p.m. Thursday, April 11; 2 p.m. Thursday, May 9; 7 p.m. Thursday, June 13; 2 p.m. Thursday, July 11; 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 (at the H. Douglas Barclay Courthouse, Pulaski); 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12; 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10; 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14; and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12.

Committee meetings and Legislature meetings are open to the public and held in the Legislative Office Building at 46 E. Bridge St., Oswego unless otherwise indicated. Meeting agendas are posted on the county’s government website at www.oswegocounty.com.
