Oswego County Health Department Hosts Preventive Health Fair April 4

March 22, 2024

The Oswego County Health Department hosts a Preventive Health Fair on Thursday, April 4 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Nick Stereo Public Health Clinic, 70 Bunner St., Oswego.

The Preventive Health Fair is one of four unique events for this year’s National Public Health Week. National Public Health Week recognizes and celebrates the hard work and dedication that goes into maintaining and promoting public health.

Oswego County residents are invited to come to the health fair for a variety of activities, including an American Red Cross blood drive. Participants must be aged 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health, to be eligible for blood donation in New York State.

According to the American Red Cross, good health means that a person feels well and can perform normal activities. If an individual has a chronic condition such as diabetes, good health means that the individual is also being treated and their chronic condition is under control.

Those interested in donating should consult with their health care provider about any potential concerns before registering for an appointment. Regular blood donors can donate whole blood every 56 days, up to six times a year. Frequent blood donors can track their donation history and schedule an appointment using the American Red Cross Blood Donor phone app.

All donors must register with the American Red Cross before the day of the blood drive.

To register, schedule an appointment or learn more about eligibility requirements, visit www.redcrossblood.org/give or call the Oswego County Health Department at 315-349-3497.

SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital will also be at the event with its mammography van to provide breast cancer screenings. The van will be available between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and it is equipped with a state-of-the-art 3D digital mammogram system, private exam room, dressing rooms and a waiting room.

Women aged 40 or older, who have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months and are not experiencing breast problems are eligible for an appointment.

SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital requires a prescription or order from your health care provider for a screening mammogram. If you do not have a health care provider, the registered nurse on site can give a clinical breast exam and an Upstate physician will provide a one-time order for the mammogram.

Schedule an appointment to ensure that you are seen for a mammogram on the day of the event. Call 315-464-2588 or visit www.upstate.edu/noexcuses/.

In addition to the blood drive and mammography van, health fair visitors can also receive a free blood pressure check, a free copy of their immunization record and learn about the Lead Prevention Program from the Oswego County Health Department.

Other activities and information will also be provided by the Oswego County Office for the Aging, Oswego County Opportunities, Inc. Reproductive Services, North Country Cancer Services Program, Central New York Poison Prevention, City of Oswego Fire Department, City of Oswego Police Department and Mentor Ambulance.
