Oswego County Cancels Public Transit Services on April 8 Due to Solar Eclipse

March 29, 2024

Oswego County Mobility Management announces that Oswego County public transit services will not operate on Monday, April 8 due to increased traffic expected for solar eclipse viewing. The only transit service offered that day will be dialysis transportation.

“Due to the heavy traffic anticipated for the solar eclipse, we have made the decision to cancel transportation services on Monday, April 8,” said Oswego County Mobility Management Director Heather Snow. “With the influx of visitors and associated traffic congestion expected for that event, we wanted to avoid having riders on buses for prolonged periods of time or the possibility of anyone being stuck at a destination due to traffic delays. We will still run our transportation for dialysis patients, but all other services are cancelled for the day.”

Centro buses will operate on eclipse day for those that need transportation. To view a Centro bus schedule, visit https://www.oswegocounty.com/departments/mobility_management.

The total eclipse will be viewable throughout Oswego County, with start and end times for the event varying by location. Generally, it begins shortly after 2 p.m., with totality just before 3:30 p.m., and concludes shortly after 4:30 p.m.

There may be issues with driving conditions due to near nighttime skies, so residents and visitors are advised to be especially aware of pedestrians and prepared for traffic delays: gas up early, pack snacks and water, and have a phone charger and paper maps.

Those traveling to Oswego County for the event are encouraged to come early and stay late to avoid peak traffic congestion.
