Eclipse Celebration Continues on April 24

April 12, 2024

The H. Lee White Maritime Museum continues its celebration of the recent eclipse by welcoming SUNY Oswego Professor Natalia Lewandowska for a presentation of “Eclipses and Navigation.” Part of its History Lecture Series, the free event begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 at the museum located at 1 W. First Street Pier, Oswego.

Her presentation explores the role eclipses have played in navigation throughout history. It will be followed by a stargazing session during which participants can view the night sky through various pieces of astronomical equipment.

Dr. Lewandowska is an assistant professor in the physics department at SUNY Oswego and serves as director of the Shineman Planetarium. Her research focuses on highly magnetized and quickly rotating neutron stars, known as pulsars.

As an observational astronomer, Dr. Lewandowska uses data taken with various telescopes – both ground and space-based – and is a member of the NANOGrav and the NICER Collaboration working with the radio, X-ray and gamma-ray data of pulsars.

Her passion for educational outreach led to her role as the project director for the Pulsar Science Collaborative (PSC), an educational outreach project that provides middle and high school students with the opportunity to gain research experience using data taken from the Green Bank Telescope.

This lecture program series is sponsored by Brookfield Renewable, US.

The museum and its Treasure Chest Gift Shop are open Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m.
