Oswego County OFA Celebrates Resident’s 104th Birthday

June 9, 2023

Oswego County Office for the Aging (OFA) staff visited Scriba resident Virginia Worfolk to celebrate her 104th birthday; bringing her a birthday treat, card and balloon. Virginia is a participant of OFA’s Home Delivered Meals program.

“We recently decided to start recognizing our OFA clients turning 100 years or older,” said OFA Director Sara Sunday. “These are milestone birthdays, and our seniors deserve to be celebrated in a special way. Clients celebrating 100-plus birthdays will receive a small birthday treat as well as recognition on the OFA Facebook page, if they are interested and willing.”

Virginia was born on May 31, 1919, in Bayonne, New Jersey. She attended high school there and went on to receive an associate degree from St. Alfonso Jr. College in New Jersey. She married her husband, John Worfolk, in 1941 and traveled with him during his service as a chief radio operator for the U.S. Coast Guard.

After John became disabled with polio, the family returned to New Jersey to live, where Virginia worked for Borrough Business Machine Corporation. She retired after 30 years with the company, and in 2001 moved to Scriba to be closer to her daughter, Lee.

Virginia has two children, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She has always been very active in the United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school and bible studies over the years. She still enjoys reading and crossword puzzles.

Seniors who do not participate in OFA programs but are turning age 100 or over are also able to be recognized by OFA on their Facebook page and with a birthday card in the mail.

If you know a senior celebrating their 100th (or older) birthday and would like them to be recognized, contact OFA at 315-349-3484. Loved ones should submit the senior’s information and photo with their consent.
