Oswego County Clerk’s Office Launches Fraud Monitoring Program

Jan. 12, 2024

Oswego County Clerk Terry Wilbur announces a new fraud monitoring service available to property owners through his office. “Fraud Alert” is a free online tool aimed at helping homeowners protect their most valuable asset. Residents can sign up for the program now.

“In this modern era of rising scams and identity theft, we’ve also noticed an increase in concerns from residents about safeguarding their property,” said Wilbur. “We’re pleased to offer this monitoring program to homeowners. It provides an extra layer of protection against some fraudulent transactions and gives them more peace of mind.”

Property owners can sign up for the service on the Oswego County Clerk’s deeds and mortgages page: https://www.oswegocounty.com/government/county_clerk/deeds___mortgages_.php. Scroll down to click on the link for “Fraud Notifications for Oswego County” and enter the full given name and an email address to receive alerts.

Wilbur reminds residents that there may be other property owners in the county that share the same name, so it’s very important to carefully review any document brought to their attention after they register.

People only need to register their name once and the program will scan all public records on file in the County Clerk’s Office daily. This includes deeds, mortgages, discharges, judgements and liens.

Individuals will receive an email alert if a new document is filed in their name and can view the record online or at the County Clerk’s Office, 46 E. Bridge St., Oswego.

“‘Fraud Alert’ is an easy way for homeowners to track real property transactions made in their name, but it is not the only service we offer,” said Wilbur. “In full compliance with anti-fraud legislation (NYS Real Property Tax Law § 291), we also mail printed notices to property owners when a transfer of residential property in their name is recorded in our office. In the event that it was a fraudulent transaction, this gives them the opportunity to contact local law enforcement and obtain legal counsel to resolve the matter.”
